Supply Lists for each grade
We had several requests from parents regarding summer work for students. Please see the attached links for each grade. Students in each grade should read and complete 3 books and book responses (1st link). The rest of the summer packets are found below. Students in Grades 1-5 should complete at least 6 pages of their choosing. Grades 6-8 have assigned articles with questions.

1). Read "The Roller Coaster" by Shelby Ostergaard. After reading, complete both the multiple-choice questions and the short responses. If possible, print out the questions and write your answers. Work should be given to Ms. Cardona in September when you return to school.
2). Read "Should Your School Day Start Later" debate article (attached below) Read the article, then answer both multiple choice questions and short response questions. Work should be handwritten, and given to Ms. Cardona in September.
7th Grade
1). Gary Soto, "Mother and Daughter". (attached) Read and answer both multiple-choice questions and short answer questions. Work should be handwritten and given to Ms. Cardona in September.
2). Reflect on the mother/daughter relationships you've studied in 6th grade. ("brooklyn rain", "Fish Cheeks", "I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid") Write a short essay discussing "Mother and Daughter" and how it relates to the stories/poems you studied in 6th grade. Compare and contrast the stories/poems with this new story, "Mother and Daughter" by Gary Soto.
3) Read the attached poem "Amphibians", and then answer the questions. All answers should be handwritten and submitted to Ms. Cardona in September.
8th Grade
1). Amy Tan, "Rules of the Game". Notice this story is part of THE JOY LUCK CLUB, and has the same characters as "Two Kinds". Your response should reflect understanding of BOTH stories! Read and answer both multiple-choice questions and short answer questions. Work should be handwritten and given to Ms. Cardona in September.
2). Read the instructions for the Female Warrior essay (based on "Two Kinds" and "Ribbons" and write an essay answering the questions in the instructions.
3). Read "The Last Class" and answer the questions (multiple choice and short response. In addition to these questions, write a short mini-essay about how "The Last Class" connects to Salva in A LONG WALK TO WATER. Discuss the similarities and differences between the events described and how each boy responded to them.
